St Lucia Night Drives

Spotlight the Eastern Shores after dark for hippos, bushbabies and chameleons.

When the iSimangaliso gates close at sunset, private cars have to leave, and a different set of animals takes over. A guided night drive is the only way to explore the Eastern Shores after dark, and it is one of the most memorable things to do in St Lucia.

What you can see after dark

Hippos leave the water at night to graze, so night drives often find them out on the grasslands. Guides use spotlights to pick out bushbabies, genets, owls, nightjars and chameleons in the roadside bush, and on lucky nights hyena, leopard or the shy red duiker.

How night drives work

Licensed operators run night drives in open safari vehicles, usually leaving St Lucia around sunset and returning a few hours later. Guides follow park rules on spotlights so animals are not dazzled, and most operators collect you from your accommodation.

What to bring

A warm layer even in summer (open vehicles get chilly), insect repellent, binoculars and a camera that copes with low light. Leave the flash off: guides will tell you when a photo won't disturb an animal.

Combine it with a day activity

A sunset hippo and croc cruise followed by a night drive makes a full first day in St Lucia. Or pair a morning at Cape Vidal with a night drive through the same Eastern Shores to see how different it feels after dark.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive into iSimangaliso at night myself?

No. Gates close at sunset and private vehicles must be out by then. A licensed operator's guided night drive is the only way to be in the park after dark.

Is a night drive suitable for children?

Most children love the spotlighting, but drives end after dark and can get cold, so check the operator's minimum age and pack warm clothes.

Will we see big animals at night?

Hippos grazing on land are a common highlight. Bigger predators such as leopard and hyena are possible but never guaranteed; the smaller nocturnal animals are what makes night drives special.
