Whale Watching in St Lucia

Humpback whales on their winter migration along the iSimangaliso coast.

Each winter, humpback whales migrate up the east coast of South Africa to warmer waters to breed and calve, then head south again in spring. The iSimangaliso coastline puts you right on their route, and St Lucia is the main launch point for licensed boat-based whale watching.

When is whale season?

Humpbacks pass the coast from about June to November, with July to October usually the best months. Breaching, tail-slapping and mothers with calves are all common sights later in the season.

Boat-based whale watching

Only licensed operators may approach whales by boat, and they follow distance rules to protect the animals. Launches go through the surf, so expect a lively, wet ride out. Trips also regularly find dolphins.

Seeing whales from shore

On a calm day you can spot blows and breaches from high points along the coast, especially at Cape Vidal and Mission Rocks. Bring binoculars and scan the horizon in the morning, when the sea is usually calmest.

What to bring

A windproof jacket, sunscreen, a hat, motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to it, and a camera you don't mind getting splashed. Most operators set a minimum age because of the surf launch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for whale watching in St Lucia?

July to October usually gives the most sightings, as large numbers of humpbacks travel both north and south along the coast.

Is boat-based whale watching rough?

Boats launch through the surf, so the start can be bumpy and wet. If you get seasick, take medication beforehand and sit towards the back of the boat.

Can I see whales without a boat?

Yes, on calm days whales are often visible from shore at Cape Vidal and Mission Rocks. A boat trip gets you much closer.
